Film horor Salmokji langsung langsung jadi nomor 1 box office Korea di hari pertama tayang Pada 8 April, film ini ditonton 89.912 orang hanya dalam sehari. Angka itu bahkan dua kali lipat dari penonton hari pertama The King’s Warden dan Project Hail Mary. Opening-nya juga jadi yang terbesar untuk film horor Korea sejak The Medium pada 2021. Salmokji: Whispering Water bahkan berhasil mengalahkan rekor pembukaan Project Hail Mary. Yang bikin makin heboh, film ini punya rating penonton 9,5 dan CGV Egg Index 91%, padahal genre horor biasanya jarang dapat nilai setinggi itu. Banyak penonton bilang suara air dan suasana waduknya serem banget sampai bikin merinding. Ceritanya tentang sebuah tim syuting yang pergi ke waduk untuk mengambil ulang rekaman road view setelah ada sosok misterius tertangkap kamera. I’m just so so happy for Director Lee Sangmin. This is his first feature film with not that big of a budget, and it topped daily box office 🥹 I really think his genuine love for horror movies and him wanting to revive korean horror films with actual ghosts plays a great role in Salmokji being well-received. Lee Sangmin has a clear purpose in his directing, which is to show HORROR! GHOST! HORROR! instead of a deep storyline (he didn’t even include Suin Kitae backstory to avoid distracting from the horror). Reviews also say that Salmokji doesn’t have that much of a “story”, it mainly focuses on its horror elements so the plot itself is quite predictable (despite the “twist” in the latter part). HOWEVER, the directing is great so the “horror elements” are very well executed. The sound is really scary, and there are jumpscares but there are actually cues as for when the ghosts will appear so you can get ready and cover your eyes if needed. There are also attempts at new and fun angles, staying true to its “Road view filming” concept. The use of ghost hunting tools for Daah’s character was also a refreshing take. Hence, knetz refer to Salmokji as “Kimchi-jjigae”, very familiar taste (of horror) to Koreans BUT it’s really well-cooked with great directing and production. Props to Lee Sangmin and Showbox!! Of course, other than Hyeyoon all the leads gained lots of praises for their acting in Salmokji too 👍 It’s a big screen debut for some of them (Jongwon and Daah for example) so this is a great feat!
