Dawn Angelique Richard spoke a fucking word. Her IG Live yesterday was very enlightening and insightful. This is why I have no issue with Tinashe, Ciara or Kelly Rowland being full fledged pop girls. Dawn said it: “You guys ask for R&B but don’t buy the albums” Thank God Dawn has never let the color of her skin box her in. As an indie act, she has creative freedom. Financial Freedom is another thing. So if she’s gonna make an album, she’s gonna make what pays. Rihanna remaining primarily pop her entire career was the smartest thing she ever did. You saw the shift from her first to second albums. ‘Music Of The Sun’ - 500K. ‘A Girl Like Me’ - platinum with a #1 single. SZA: ‘SOS’ will be a diamond album shortly. She erased labels & genres and WON BIG. Stephanie Mills also spoke on this: “They don’t want R&B from us” So until Black R&B artists get the support deserved from labels & consumers, stop asking. Stop asking for nostalgia records for engagement. Y’all don’t buy the shit. Go. Get. The. Album. The shit costs money to make. You have to pay writers, producers, engineers, photographers, distributors. Then, tours have to be funded. For an album y’all ain’t buy, stream or download. You MAYBE press play on ONE record. Example: Sevyn Streeter’s amazing ‘Drunken Wordz Sober Thoughtz’ album. She delivered, y’all just didn’t buy it. @DawnRichard 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Madonna is a major collector and patron of art with a blue-chip collection worth over $100 million. She is frequently cited by major publications as one of the world's most significant private collectors. Her Met Gala appearance serves as a high-art sequel to her 1995 "Bedtime Story" video. This appearance is a literal recreation of Leonora Carrington’s 1945 surrealist painting, "The Temptation of St. Anthony". Her 'Bedtime Story' music video also used identical surrealist imagery inspired by the same Leonora Carrington, and it's so artistically significant that it is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) — a rare honor for a pop artist. Anyone who's paid attention to Madonna's work knows she's a master at bridging high-art to pop culture, and she's been doing so for decades. Her impact in this context is so vast it spawned a dedicated academic field called "Madonna Studies" in the mid-1980s. Scholars use her work to explore complex issues of gender, sexuality, and the postmodern revolution. So for Madonna, this Met Gala appearance wasn't just fashion for being on-theme. It was a living thesis on her relationship with high-art. She literalized the academic and cultural theories surrounding her by transforming into a living surrealist masterpiece. The Queen of Pop has also always been the Queen of High-Art.
