The exodus of Kashmiri Pandits proved challenging to Jammuites but still as a KP girl who married a Jammu boy, with neighbours, classmates and friends who were from Jammu - Sikhs, Dogras, Jammu Muslims…everybody who is from Jammu.. I’d tell you that the overall sentiment was respecting. Yes with some taunts here and there, a few ones who couldn’t digest sharing roti kapda aur makaan were there. BUT sharing this repeatedly because those who don’t live in Jammu have no clue of what they’re blaming the province for.. Jammu people are one of the most non aggressive chill karo halwa khao kind of people. They benefited from KP teachers and have been open about it..and to us they accepted us in their homes at meagre rents for very long. Later on we had reservation and moved out did much better but they didn’t. So General category of Jammu boys and girls struggled and still shone in mainland India on their own merit.. Lola etc are not heavy heartwrenching taunts..they’re simple alag dikhne wale aa gaye hain point outs. I do not have a soft corner for anyone in particular but this particular Bhagat family in Bahu Fort took in 9 people from our family on migration and for a long time didn’t take money from my dad..eventually dad paid the rent but I haven’t seen such humbleness anywhere else.. even Maharashtrians for that matter are very welcoming here.. that’s why a lot of KPs married in Dogra’s and Maharashtrians. There is acceptance and love more than we give them credit for. Another example is Jammu settled Muslims back from 1990s and early 2000s before the Bhatindification of land.. were extremely well adjusting and loving.. Jammu is one of the few cities I feel in the world which is very inclusive in nature.. most least bothered about world affairs.. people just want to live a quiet life..visit relatives..attend functions and be merry in evenings.. don’t give the city any colour. The city is bigger than politics. The city is love.
