Breaking 🚨🚨🚨 Students of Fountain University, Osun State, on 15th Of April took to the hostel areas to protest the prolonged unavailability of electricity and water in their hostels. Chanting slogans such as 'We want light! We want water!', the protesters expressed frustration over days/weeks without basic utilities, which they say has made studying, hygiene, and daily living extremely difficult despite paying accommodation fees. According to eyewitnesses/students, the lack of power has left hostels in darkness at night, raising security concerns, while water scarcity has forced many to source water from outside or manage with limited supplies. University management is yet to issue an official statement, but similar issues have prompted quick interventions in other institutions. Students are calling for urgent repairs to generators, boreholes, or connections to the national grid. One student lamented: “We pay heavily for hostel accommodation, yet we cannot even take a proper bath or study comfortably. This is unacceptable.” According to various student in the institution, the dean of student affairs allegedly told the student they will be tired of the protest Effects on Academic Life and Student Morale Beyond immediate discomfort, the outages have reportedly affected preparation for examinations and continuous assessments. Students in science and technology-related courses, who often need power for laptops and internet access, feel particularly disadvantaged. “How do you expect us to compete academically when we cannot even read at night or keep our devices charged?” one final-year student was quoted as saying. Health, Hygiene, and Gender Considerations Water shortages have exacerbated hygiene challenges, with some students expressing worries about increased risks of infections or water-borne diseases when relying on alternative, sometimes untreated sources. Female students have been more vocal about safety implications in dark hostels. I hope the broad of trustees and academic officials do something about this to restore normalcy in the institution
