Members of Extinction Rebellion France, an environmental and social activism group, scaled the Eiffel Tower on the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, displaying a Palestinian flag in protest against Israel's genocide in Gaza.

Palestinians are commemorating 78 years since the Nakba, or the Catastrophe, a period that began in 1948 with the mass expulsion of Palestinians and the creation of the state of Israel. Al Jazeera’s @nour_odeh reports.

78 years ago, Israel declared itself a state. Palestinians now commemorate the day after — May 15 — as the anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe.” Between 1947 and 1949, Zionist militias massacred thousands of Palestinians and violently forced over 750,000 from their homes.

Today marks Nakba Day, an annual day of remembrance to commemorate the expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians between 1947 and 1949 during the creation of the State of Israel and the year that followed.
