Building for #TheMicIsYours 🎙️ This is @Indilingo’s AI Tutor teaching a lesson from the Bhagavad Gita in Sanskrit, with voice powered by Sarvam Bulbul V3. This is a production feature, already used by real learners on Indilingo. Our goal is simple: enable anyone, anywhere in the world to learn Sanskrit, not just read it, but hear it spoken clearly and naturally. Bulbul V3 helps us bring Sanskrit to life with authentic Indian voices, making ancient knowledge accessible through modern AI. One of the world's oldest languages, taught at internet scale with India’s voices, powering it. Built with Sarvam Bulbul V3 Tagging @SarvamAI @SarvamForDevs #TheMicIsYours #Sanskrit #AIForIndia #IndicAI #VoiceAI #Indilingo

Two days ago, I woke up, checked the dashboard like every morning, and saw India overtake the US in revenue for the first time ever for @Indilingo: ~$250 from Indian users, ~$240 from the US. I started building Indilingo in September 2024 after living in Bengaluru for a while. I kept hearing about language issues between locals and migrants, and it bothered me. A bus conductor once shouted at me for not knowing Kannada. It wasn’t just my incident. This was a pattern I saw everywhere. I thought: why isn’t there an app where Indians can learn Indian languages from their mother tongue? We’re such a diverse country; this should exist. So we built it. Five of us, completely bootstrapped. We kept it free for the first year to get people using it and seeing the value. But reality hit. Bills needed paying, server and LLM costs weren’t going away, and we couldn’t run on hope forever. In August 2025 we launched paid plans. Indilingo PRO. For months, the US led in revenue. I was grateful people were paying at all, but I had some very low points. We built this for Indians, and I kept wondering if they’d ever actually pay. Everyone loves saying “Indians want everything free,” and I even got 1-star reviews just because we started charging. That hurt more than I expected and made me question a lot. But I knew the product was valuable and the problems were real, so we kept going. Two months ago we made changes that finally worked: we added UPI payments and experimented with pricing until we settled on ₹99/month and ₹399/year for Indian users. Things started moving. People began paying and really using the app. Today, we have people learning Kannada because they’re moving to Karnataka, couples learning each other’s languages before marriage, and many others learning Sanskrit to read ancient texts and write poetry. Our most popular languages right now (in order) are Kannada, Sanskrit, Marathi, and Telugu. These are real people solving real problems in their lives, choosing to pay for our product to do it. Here’s what I learned: Indians don’t want everything free. That’s not true. What Indians want is value, real solutions to actual problems. When you build something that genuinely helps with something they care about, they pay, they respect it, they support it. I know $250 doesn’t sound like much in today’s startup world of hundred-million-dollar seed rounds. But this number means everything to me and my team. It means we were right about the problem. It means the product actually matters. It means users trust us enough to invest their money in learning, connecting with culture, and personal growth. We’re still bootstrapped. Still five people grinding every day. Still figuring things out as we go. But we’re building something real, something that matters, and today I have proof it’s working.
