The is NCX & AFEX in the North as well as Lagos Commodity & Future Exchange at Lagos
7.Experts: In-fact both north and south has lot of experts includes professors, PHD holders, in agronomy, botany, plant sciences, livestock, extension services, agric-economist, commodity brokers, agric-engineers, etc.
In short, my answer to above question of who owns and benefits more from agriculture could be both, meaning it is all Nigerians business, which creates lots of jobs and wealth across both north and south.
Nigeria produces 12 million tons of maize with market value of about 4 trillion Naira, 50 million birds for poultry valued at 600 billion, 5 million tons of local rice valued at 5 trillion and so on annually
The purpose for this writes up is for all of us to wake up and support agricultural development of Nigeria for inclusive growth, lets stopped sabotaging it with negative policies thinking is for one region or tribes, inter trade between North and South is in trillion Naira in agricultural value chain.

Nigeria our Country – Part I
AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY – Prospects & Challenges
Nigeria has potential to produce most of its foods and even export to other countries, we are blessed with arable land, different ecology, hardworking farmers, large extension staff network and well-trained agricultural expert of different background.
Our major challenges are ethnic and regional difference, which makes us less supportive of each other, rivalry and envying others progress, nepotism and corruption, which affect our collective growth at all level as described in the last component of this write up.
Any policy to promote agriculture is seen as an attempt to help Northerners and can easily be sabotage or stopped by any Southerner with opportunity at both governmental or private sector. This keep happening over long period of time, to the extend almost all ministers of Agriculture are of northern origin to represent and protect their regional interest against sabotage.
Efforts to attract support from financial sector always are not getting proper attention from Nigerian banking system dominated by southerners.
Purpose of writing this article is for Nigerians to wake up, understanding how to build a strong country, as we have no other place to live better than where God created us. Let us be brothers’ keepers and understand needs for simultaneous growth as a Nigeria.
UNDERSTANDING WHO OWNS AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS BETWEEN NORTH & SOUTH?
My study and understanding on agricultural investment revealed, it is jointly owned by both North & South in almost equal and complimentary proportion, so if any region tried to sabotage the agricultural development, it will affect both directly and indirectly.
Agriculture is now multi stages business activities through value-chain, which includes inputs, mechanization, production, aggregation/warehousing, transportation, processing and marketing/export. All these processes are coordinated by farmers, investors & experts.
1.Inputs: This refers to all raw materials uses by farmers for production of foods and livestock, nitrogen is the most important macro nutrient for food production which is majorly from urea, all the 3 urea fertilizer producing companies are in Rivers & Lagos state, with combined production capacity of about 3 million metric tons at current price of 700,000 per ton, it means these 3 companies sales/trades over 2.2 trillion Naira annually, about 40% of their sales comes from the northern farmers. In addition, other fertilizer blending raw materials like DAP, MOP, MAP & GAS are imported through these 2 states with market value of over 1.5 trillion Naira, also agro-chemicals like herbicides, insecticides, pesticides etc are imported through them. For livestock, all poultry and fish feeds are majorly produces in south. On the other hand, real field production includes NPK fertilizers, seeds, labor, watering which cost trillions of Naira are majorly handled by the northerners.
2.Mechanization: Tractors, combined harvesters and power tillers are been imported through coastal areas, so also fuel to operate them, while it is northerners that uses them in farm for food production.
3.Production: Animal rearing and food production includes cereals, legumes and vegetables is more than 80% done by northerners, while south control poultry, fish and most fruits production, these are also multi trillion Naira businesses
4.Aggregation/warehousing: Though mostly these businesses are domiciled in the north, create a lot of labor and opportunities for residence, but it is true investment owner includes both northerners, southerners and many international investors.
5.Processing: Most of rice milling factories are in north, while most human and infant foods producers, animal & fish feeds producers are located in southern Nigeria.
6.Marketing/export: This agricultural business opportunity brought both northerners, southerners and non-Nigerian together, and is mostly executes through coastal areas.
