On this day in 1998: Betty Carter joins the ancestors. She was 69. Born Lillie Mae Jones in Flint and raised in Detroit, she enjoyed a great music career that spanned more than 40 years. Carter recorded with greats the likes of Ray Charles, Carmen McRae, and Dizzy Gillespie.
