@GovGoneWild The only one who can give people property tax relief is the state legislature — let us vote!

This conclusion is wrong for a few reasons. If there was to be a consumption tax to offset any losses, it wouldn’t be done by the state. It would be local governments asking, and getting approval from their voters, the way it is done today. Secondly, there is no need to offset on a statewide level, a reduction or even elimination of tax revenue on homestead property as the growth of local governments the last 6 years has far outpaced inflation and population growth. Third, other states have higher sales taxes in addition to property and income taxes. Louisiana has a 5 cent state sales tax and 7 percent local sales tax authority (12 cent combined). Alabama 15 cent combined authority, California 12.5 cent combined authority, Arkansas, 12.625 cent combined authority. Florida would still not have income taxes and if passed, would not have property taxes on homestead property.
Florida Policy Institute@FloridaPolicy

“An analysis by the Florida Policy Institute found that Florida would have to double its sales tax to 12% to replace lost property tax revenue. The move would make the state sales tax the nation's highest.” yahoo.com/news/articles/…

The reality is that local governments taxed $32 billion on property in 2019. Today, that has ballooned to $60 billion. If no relief is enacted, that number is projected to be $84 billion by the beginning of next decade — almost a tripling of the tax revenue in a little more than 10 years. Not sustainable for our homesteaded taxpaying Floridians!
Blaise Ingoglia@GovGoneWild

This article is inaccurate. Here’s why: 1) The proposal is to get rid of property taxes on HOMESTEADED properties ONLY. Not all properties. The basis for the calculation is wrong. 2) Author assumes you have to replace spending at CURRENT levels. Our FAFO analysis show there is plenty of room to cut. This is just more scare tactics by spreading misinformation to keep large, bloated budgets.

@RonDeSantis Honest question from a voter: how do municipalities cover the funding short lost from homestead property taxes? I love the concept, just wondering about the budget implications.

Regarding a property tax proposal for the 2026 ballot: we’ve been working with members of the Senate who have been great partners. Given that it can’t be voted on by the people before November, it’s better to do it right than do it quick!

@GovGoneWild Blaise most people don’t understand how these rates are calculated and how property taxes work. Maybe a town hall on TV “property tax town hall” where people ask questions so we can clear the issue and voters aren’t manipulated as they have been so far?

If your local elected official proclaims to be a good steward of your tax dollars because they “cut your millage rate” and your property taxes still went up it’s a TAX INCREASE. Am I right? Don’t listen to the spin.

Here’s why the City of St. Pete’s spending is so egregious: The City has major infrastructure needs they have neglected for decades. They didn’t spend the property tax windfall fixing it, they wasted it on an obnoxious amount of bureaucrats. Think about that the next time the streets flood or sewage gets dumped into the bay after a storm.

When you look at the amount of revenue from homestead taxes it is a small fraction of the total for most cities, but the local leadership is still out there talking to the public urging them not to vote for property tax legislation (like the recent town hall with Kathy Castro). Newspapers are publishing daily columns scaring voters into believing they will lose funding for pickleball and crime will go up. The public sentiment seems to believe these lies when they come from credible media sources even though we all know they are biased. Something must be done to fight back and help taxpayers get relief from these egregious taxes on our property.

Yes my hard earned money going to wasteful spending is unsettling. However Mayor Ken Welch recently told the Tampa Bay Times that the city uses 98% of the property taxes to fund police and fire departments. Please set the record straight that essential services will not be defunded so the measure can pass.

Step 1: Waste 💰, then cry poor. Step 2: Raise taxes because they say they “need” 💰 to do the things they should’ve done in the first place. Step 3: Start again at Step 1. It’s a vicious cycle that taxpayers are sick and tired of.

@RonDeSantis I agree but the general public needs clarity on essential services not being cut - when I talk to people this is their concern. Makes you wonder if it will actually pass?

In 2019, local government property tax revenue throughout Florida was roughly $32 billion. If you adjusted that upward for population growth and inflation growth through 2026, the revenue would be approximately $44.6 billion. Actual projected property tax revenue across local governments in FL for 2026: $60 billion. Wouldn’t it be better to give a full homestead property tax exemption for our residents’ primary homes?

If 7 or 8 property tax cut proposals are on the ballot at the same time all of them will fail. We need ONE, and only ONE, property tax cut proposal on the ‘26 ballot and offer Floridians real, substantial property tax relief. Let’s get it done for Floridians!

Look I understand the reasons for voting yes (and I will vote yes) but there are many people out there long term floridians, paying low property taxes and high insurance who just don’t see it the way you do. Thats why I believe the elimination legislation (HR 201) needs something more, some other source of revenue for cities in order to appeal broadly to the both sides of the isle - including democrats.

@GovGoneWild Must have a plan to offset losses or won’t pass. Marginal increase in sales tax is based on consumption and will relieve people’s anxiety of no funding for cities.

FACT: Property taxes have skyrocketed last 6 years. FACT: Local governments are wasting your hard earned tax dollars. FACT: Affordability is a BIG issue for Floridians. Let’s help them. We need ONE strong constitutional proposal to deliver property tax relief in 2026.

@RonDeSantis Voters with low property taxes due to Florida’s failed save our homes law will likely vote to keep cities funded since they’re not affected by rising home values. This needs to be considered!

@GovGoneWild I support the property tax reforms (complete elimination) but politicians need to understand the pulse of the people. Residents who are sitting on their homes with low property tax are not as affected as new homebuyers - therefore they will not defund their cities.
