if you have actually seen a video of a fox hunt, to the very, unbelievably bloody/savage ending, you will be stricken with a kind of existential horror; not just that the lone fox is "hounded" until it is exhausted, & not just that it is torn to pieces, but the involvement of the human beings in the savagery is repulsive. seeing fox hunt videos in the UK, it wasn't such a stretch to interpret the "hounding" of the helpless animal as an emblem of British imperialism. so too the Irish were hunted down, slaughtered by British soldiers. so too-- well, fill in the blank.

If you are an ulster person of the Protestant tradition, you should be aware that a big chunk of southern political opinion regards you as untouchable. The new Ireland stuff is a facade.

@Marina__Coyle We've already had two Protestant presidents, Erskine Childers and Douglas Hyde. Do not conflate that with membership of the Orange Order (which, yes, many Catholics wouldn't like - understandably?).

We started emailing - his last message said "Níl fhios agam cáthain a bheidh deis againn labhairt, ach beidh am éigin" (I dont know when we'll be able to talk, but we will). I never followed up out of shyness, & now I mourn the conversations that me & the world never got to have.
