Yesterday, I had a conversation with someone that made me realise how overcooked we are in the pot of unhealthy love ideal. He had met a woman just a few months ago, and by all accounts, the connection was practically divine. Everything checked for him. Her character exuded integrity. Her beliefs aligned seamlessly with his. Her intellectual capacity made conversation effortless, even enriching. But perhaps most significantly, she was emotionally available. And as a sweet cherry on top, she wasn’t even a biller. Here’s where the problem lies. He noticed that in the past two weeks, he’d begun to question the entire vibe. His reason was she felt too good to be true. Unconsciously, he found himself getting irritable whenever she called, and beginning to actively self-sabotage the relationship by staying away. His inner monologue became riddled with anxiety, and he began inventing excuses like accusing her of being “clingy.” “I’d always wanted this. What the fuck is wrong with me?” This was his question. I rued a smile and sadly shook my head. It’s a strange tragedy. We are masters at romanticising the idea of being loved fully, then shudder when it arrives in flesh and intention. The reason for this brokenness is not far-fetched. We have become thoroughly marinated in the spices of digital bile. Every day, we scroll past rivers of bitter stories about toxic relationships, scorched-earth marriages, memes mocking vulnerability, belittling comments about one gender, and even more belittling replies from the other, all in the name of “savage” clapbacks. We’re applauded for cynicism, rewarded for detachment, and encouraged to be skeptical of goodness. The result is a psychic environment so toxic, even sincerity smells suspicious. There’s no telling how far the mind is able to contort itself into taking hateful shapes, by virtue of harmful narratives daily absorbed over time. This is why I feel terribly sorry for those who would find something beautiful, but would lose it on the pretext of “there’s no good person out there anymore.” We often forget that belief shapes perception, and perception feeds behaviour. Tell yourself long enough that no good love exists, and when it shows up, you will blink it into disappearance. There are few tragedies worse than having a heart riddled with holes, leaking all the love it should be holding in its depths.
