Climate skeptics LOVE to post the chart shared by David below👇 - supposedly showing no correlation between CO2 and temperature over the last 600 million years! But... if you only knew the history of the chart (which we shall henceforth call 'the Heib mash-up'), you see how ABSURD it is, and also how incredibly DISINGENUOUS it is to share it while - in the same breath - making claims about "the proper scientific method"! First, the chart is scientifically illiterate. It was made by a mining engineer named Monte Heib for his crank blog, and later popularized by Patrick Moore (a recipient of coal industry financing) in a 'report' the latter published seeking to refute anthropogenic global warming. There've been several iterations of this chart now, all stemming from the Heib chart, shared ad nauseum by the CO2 coalition (also funded by fossil fuels), supposedly adding in a wide range of newer sources up to 2013, using literally hand drawn curves 🥴 As you can see, Heib draws from a range of sources published *more than 25 years ago* (in particular Scotese (originally Scotese 1999 and later Scotese 2002) and Berner (originally Berner 1994; then Berner and Kothavala 2001). While these are real sources (and we'll come back to them in a moment), folks like @Ceist8 and Gavin Schmidt (see following tweets in this thread) have shown how Heib copied a vertical temperature schematic from Scotese which itself was merely a broad estimation of 'hot and cold' periods over the eons, turned it on its side, and superimposed it over another chart by Berner et al., with complete disregard for properly correlating time periods, and subsequently changing the temperature scale on the chart! Heib also disregarded the fact that Berner et al 2001 specifically mention greenhouse warming as a factor influencing Earth's temperature, and he later heard from Scotese (in Mills et al. 2019) literally refuting the mash-up, saying "We find a strong relationship between CO2 forcing and temperature from the proxy data." So not only is the Heib mash-up a hand-drawn abomination that has been refuted by the very 25+ year old sources it was originally derived from; it also pays no attention to the reams of scientific papers that have been published in the last 15 years on this very topic. Last time I checked the scientific method didn't just draw a cut off date after which no new evidence would be considered! And lo and behold, we happen to have really great brand new science in this area, including most recently a paper examining temperature and CO2 over the last 450 million years (Judd et al. 2024) which find - and I quote - "There is a strong relationship between PhanDA GMST and CO2, indicating that CO2 is the dominant control on Phanerozoic climate."🤔 So please spare me the bullshit about "climate theory not being a science" when you post one of the absolute most bullshitty figures on the internet.
