Why do I randomly feel sad every other day?

This was why I ran when I was younger. Experiencing the wind over my shoulders felt freeing. It's also why I am sometimes seen as a "masochist" because the next response after flight for me is "numbness". At least with pain, I get to feel.

Trauma has dealt so much with me that most of the time, my first response whenever I'm overwhelmed or faced with challenges I don't have an immediate answer to is to flee.

I bought and read Alison Botha's book, and cried tears. One thing that stayed with me, was how, as she pushed her intestines in her stomach and tightened them with her jean jacket, fighting to survive, she managed to write the names of her attackers on the sand, because they kept mentioning each other's names during the attack. That is how the attackers were found and arrested. She also drew a ❤️ on the sand, and wrote "I love you Mum", for her Mother to at least be left with a beautiful memory of her. 🥰 I subsequently invited her to our Women's Day celebrations event in 2009 when I was working for the South African Civil Aviation Authority. There was no dry eye in the room that day. 😥❤️ A great motivational speaker, a survivor, a symbol of strength of the human spirit. She allowed us to take a closer look at the wound on her neck, which was amazingly barely noticeable. Another miracle was that she was able to have a baby tears later, despite the trauma of stab wounds on her abdomen. I hope she's well and thriving where she is. 🙏🏽💖

We’ve allowed misogyny to grow and thrive in our communities online and offline and this is just a manifestation of it. We’ve collectively failed our women time and time again that’s why you have men comfortable enough recording themselves saying “they told the women to stay indoors”.

We wouldn’t need to imagine. In Lagos, a police officer defiled a 17-year-old girl who reported her stolen phone. Months later, a policeman was caught attempting to rape a female suspect in an Edo station. The policewoman who filmed it conspired to extort N1m hush money from him.

The sheer number of men involved is exactly the reason women will always be wary of all men regardless of how irrational men try to make it seem. It could be anyone because look at these numbers.

In 2020, 29-year-old Shomuyiwa Gulako was raped and murdered in her apartment in Ibadan, Oyo State, where her head was smashed with a stone. In 2025, 34-year-old Ugochi Anosike was raped and strangled in her room in Oyigbo, Rivers State. In 2025, Banke William Jimoh was raped to death and had her neck slashed during a home invasion in Keffi, Nasarawa State, by unidentified armed men. In 2025, 3-year-old Harira Yakubu Bala was found dead with multiple injuries in a bush in Jigawa State after being raped and molested. In 2025, 2-year-old Maryam Ahmad was sexually assaulted in Bassa, Plateau State by 26-year-old Job Josiah; she survived the physical attack but remains severely traumatized. In 2025, 64-year-old Mulikat Sanni was raped and murdered in Ondo State by her grandson, Ahmed Toheed, over witchcraft allegations. In 2026, a 4-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted at an Islamic school in Jikwoyi, Abuja by the son of a teacher. In 2026, there’s a RAPE FESTIVAL currently ongoing in Ozoro. Victims neither be name nor accounted for. These are the very few cases that made it to the social media. The only things that the victims have in common, is a vagina. Babies, old women, sluts, prudes, sex-workers, girlfriends, in their homes, in the church, in the mosque, in the bush, in a bus, in a school… they just need to exist. “Cover yourself, dress properly, mind where you go”… some where covered, some didn’t need to be cover because they were babies, some went to church, some were just commuting, some didn’t even go anywhere because they were in their house.

All these men will disperse after this and integrate themselves back to polite society, and tomorrow someone will say women are being irrational in their fear.

Women who think they are immune to men’s odd behaviour because they did better courses, have better jobs have a very rude awakening waiting for them.

At some point, we women need to learn to self-preservation. Moving all your life to the point of quitting your job for a man is really something. Him even doing that to her aside, what if he dies? What would she have done? Love your partner but please, protect yourself.

More reason I’ll always question any culture that involves demeaning or shutting up women. “That’s how it is” and “it’s how it’s done” will never be enough. It’ll always be met with stubbornness and the answer from me will always be Why?
