@stirling_j a problem we now have is that so many young players have been coached in the relational game, coaches may not have the right personnel to implement the relationist style they want. no one is developing a hamsik model anymore, someone who wishes to move with horizontal freedom

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we’ve seen Man City using a less conservative brand of positional play.
For me, less defensive possession, less set piece emphasis is a good thing.
But it’s a sign of the times that bringing the wingers inside is heralded as a tactical revelation.

this is why the positional vs relational debate can become silly at times. the first clip of this is a great example of how both can come together! relational play to get the build up then the ‘minimal width’ positional play principle to still get a runner between the defence!
