I don’t believe that the founding fathers were that concerned about religion. Their bigger concern was the size of the federal government. They knew that once a government grew to a massive size, that anything that became intertwined with it would lead to corruption, including religion.

Let's say we cut social security, medicare/medicaid, SNAP, etc. Yes, the government saves money, but it's not like people who rely on them have other funds. They'll stop buying, they'll stop renting, etc. The effect on the economy, well, this is why the Great Depression happened.
