One of my favorite things about winter is that in the cold and darkness some of the invisible realities of everyday life are made visible and leave evidence of their presence

After a few days of temps in the 30s, one may think this one forgot his place, but “the garden has its own time that is proper to it, and not at my disposal. Every plant has its proper time” (Byung-Chul Han). In fact all things have a proper time to those who pay attention.

Sometimes a stressful day turns on a simple joy. Looking forward to Berry’s newest novel with some of my favorite characters. Berry’s writings always challenge & disrupt my assumptions about the good life & my pace of living in the best ways

This week in class we’ve been examining the confrontation between western education (via the British) & Indian culture, Hinduism, and subjectivity. Students have been struggling through how deeply western cultural ways of knowing have framed much of the “taken-for-granted” world

In class this week we’re continuing to explore embodied knowing through Islamic education, this time in Turkey, and trying to understand some of the complexities of school forming a habitus through/with/by which students (and ourselves) live & understand the world

This semester I’m teaching a new (to me) course - Cross-cultural Perspectives on Religion & Education, I’m pretty excited for the readings & the discussions I’ll be having w/ students as we try to wrestle w/ the complex relationship between religion & eduction ….

Understanding the market forces that shape colleges is important for mission-driven schools (many of which are religious) that want to continue to exist & stay faithful to their mission. “Capitalizing on College” is essential reading to understand what’s happening to colleges

I’m so excited for JWU Softball & my daughter … won their conference and heading to NCAA (D3) tournament. It’s been a long road with a lot of time, energy, & heart poured into this, and it’s worth it!!

Doing some reading on the plane & thinking of using this with my undergrads next semester, it’s not just about colleges & finances, but about student experience & how they’re treated and looked at by colleges- institutional matters shape student experience @HigherEdSoc

Heading to the #AERA2025 in Denver? Thurs I give a paper exploring how & why parents choose Christian schooling. Sat talk about the work of Edith Stein on empathy & how this reshapes democratic education. Looking forward to some great discussion & learning w/ others.
