The whole purpose of the law was to cap retaliation, not to multiply it. A thousand for one is not Torah. It is everything the Torah was written to restrain. It forbids collective punishment. "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; each shall die for his own sin" (Deuteronomy 24:16). To burn a country and make all its mothers grieve for the acts of a few is precisely the guilt-by-blood this verse rules out. It refuses joy over death, even an enemy's. As the Egyptians drown and the angels move to sing, God silences them: "The works of my hands are drowning in the sea, and you would sing?" (Talmud, Megillah 10b). If Heaven will not celebrate a drowning enemy, no man may demand a thousand grieving mothers. And at its center: "You shall not take vengeance... you shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18), extended without exception to the outsider "You shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Leviticus 19:34). The memory of suffering is meant to produce compassion, not cruelty. That is the entire lesson of bondage and exile. "To go berserk. To obliterate." The Torah has a name for that, and it is not justice. It is the thing the Torah was built to hold back.
