For the second day in a row, Australia has broken its hottest day in recorded history. The nationwide average temperature on December 18 was 41.9°C (107.4°F) -- across an area the size of the U.S. -- that's unthinkable. We are in a climate emergency.
Bureau of Meteorology, Australia@BOM_au

Based on preliminary analysis, yesterday, Australia recorded its hottest day on record. The nationally-averaged maximum daytime temp was 41.9 °C exceeding the record set on Tuesday, 40.9 ºC. You can view the top ten highest daily maximum temps here: ow.ly/Jg3f50xDRyv

I don't know who needs to hear this but you are not a capitalist. You are a salaried employee working in an industry owned by an actual capitalist. People keep confusing simple commerce-- which has always existed--with capitalism, a specific type of economy. 1/

“We’re blowing through our carbon budget the way an addict blows through cash.” Instead of the drastic reductions desperately needed, our CO2 emissions keep increasing... we’re still moving fast in the wrong direction. #ClimateEmergency washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…

If our struggle against climate breakdown is not fundamentally anti-colonial in character, we have missed the point.

10 years ago science showed there are 15 known Earth tipping elements that regulate the state of the Planet. Today we present findings that 9 of these 15 systems are on the move. There is now scientific support for declaring a state of Planetary Emergency nature.com/articles/d4158…

Yesterday @WMO reported another record level of CO₂ in the atmosphere at 407.8 ppm. The main reason for this is the human burning of fossil fuels which is currently going at about ~1200 tonnes of CO₂ per second #dataviz #climatechange #globalwarming

95% of the oldest, thickest sea ice has disappeared since 1984. Researchers say climate change is to blame for continued loss. Q: If you subtract 95% from something, what’s left? A: An environmental crisis.@wef

It's mid-November, the sun has already set for the winter, and the Arctic is in 24-hour darkness. But the sea ice northwest of Alaska is basically still in a state of mid-summer. This has never happened before in recorded history. We are in a climate emergency.
Zack Labe@ZLabe

Very slow sea ice growth continues in the Chukchi Sea. 2019 remains a record low and outlier relative to the satellite-era record. Data from @NSIDC. This year's early spring/summer sea ice melt-out is likely a contributing factor (more solar absorption - warmer ocean waters)

For the first time in recorded history, there was no rain anywhere in mainland Australia today. Tomorrow, for the first time ever, Sydney will be at “catastrophic” risk of wildfire — a brand new category of risk. We are in a climate emergency. smh.com.au/environment/we…

Your periodic reminder: Humanity doesn't know an atmosphere like this. The last time we had this much CO2 in the air at the annual minimum was 3,000,000 years ago, before modern humans even evolved.
Zack Labe@ZLabe

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) averaged 408.53 ppm in October 2019 - a 2.53 ppm increase since October 2018. The annual minimum has now been set for this year due to the seasonal cycle. + Graph by: columbia.edu/~mhs119/GHGs/ + Data (@NOAA_ESRL): esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/trend…
