Furthermore, higher sentences don't equate lower crime rates. Just compare the US' homicide and incarceration rates with the Netherlands' or a Scandinavian country.

If you're behind bars for life you will never steal an apple again. The judge ruled that due to circumstances the chance of reoffence is extremely small.
