Watched Total Recall with Arnold. Netflix recommended it and I couldn’t resist.
Last time I saw it was maybe 20 years ago and I thought it was a decent movie. Now it feels more like a cringe comedy. Terrible acting, silly decisions...all of it.
Things change...we change over time.
The same thing happens with books. When you read something as a teenager, the author feels older and more knowledgeable than you. Years later, when you’ve passed the author’s age and experience, you reread it and think, what was going on in the author’s head?

On her 3rd week, the new Product Manager asked why a certain product decision had been made.
Her manager said: "That's just how we do it here..."
Her skip-level said it was a consensual decision.
Her skip's skip said it was part of the founding vision and sent her a 3-year-old Notion doc.
She read it but the decision wasn't in there either.
The company had "radical transparency" painted on the kitchen wall. You passed it every time you went to make coffee or grab a snack.
About 6 months later she stopped asking those questions.
I'd seen it happen at a few companies before but couldn't tell you exactly why it always seems to happen around that point.

There is no shortage of software.
AI can already compare features, prices and reviews across ten competitors in about 30 seconds. If your differentiation isn't immediately readable, it gets skipped.
What stays rare? Trust. Community. Things that are harder to copy than code and I'm not sure I have a complete list. Those are the ones I keep coming back to.
The founders positioned well right now aren't always the ones with the best product. They have a point of view their customers already believe. A reputation that does the trust work before the sales conversation. Something people would follow to the next thing they built.
Figure out the one belief your best customers hold that your product is built around. What do they think is true about how work should get done or what's broken or what matters? If you can't name it, your messaging is probably under-working. People tend to share things they believe in.

A founder called me last week. She'd been trying to fix her team. New rituals, sprint formats, the usual things you try when velocity feels off.
I asked her 15 minutes in who actually decides what gets built. She paused. "I do. Kind of..."
Then she laughed a bit like she'd heard that out loud for the first time.
What she described was a week that had reorganised itself around whatever was loudest. A client complaint. Something her co-founder had flagged on Sunday. A Slack message she'd sent herself at 11pm.
The engineers were great. There just wasn't anyone between her and them, making the calls she didn't have time for.
I told her what I thought. She needed to think about it.
She probably went back and changed the standup first. Most people do. The other thing takes longer to name.

Walking to the bus stop right now, phone in hand.
No podcast and no scrolling...just a flashcard up on my screen.
A few minutes of dead time... but I'm actually learning something I chose to learn. Not whatever the algorithm served me this morning.
What makes it stick is the reveal mechanic. You see a prompt and have to pull the answer from your head before flipping the card.
Most of us are good at capturing information and terrible at retaining it.
We bookmark tweets and articles (how many do you have?), take notes, screenshot things and then blank completely when we need to recall something in a meeting or conversation.
Spaced repetition fixes that by surfacing cards just before you'd forget them. The gaps become longer as concepts stick, so you're reviewing less over time.
5-8 minutes a day, done consistently, adds up.
