There’s a very real argument to be made that Ameshya Williams-Holiday stands among the greatest HBCU players of this century.
Her journey began at Mississippi State, where she made a national championship appearance as a reserve. But just one game into her sophomore year, she walked away from the program, later describing her time in Starkville as miserable. Basketball was off the table. She picked up work at a casino, even considered a factory job, and soon was preparing to become a mother. For a moment, it looked like her story in sports had ended before it ever truly began.
Then came the turning point. Former Jackson State head coach Tomekia Reed refused to let her settle. Reed challenged her directly — reminding Williams-Holiday that she was worth more than a clock-in job, that she could be the first in her family to earn a degree, that her child deserved to see their mother chase something bigger. The message landed.
After nearly two years away from the game, Williams-Holiday suited up for Jackson State in 2019–20 and immediately made her presence felt, averaging (13.1) points, (10.1) rebounds, and (2.9) blocks.
The very next season, she elevated the entire program. She guided Jackson State to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 13 years, capping the SWAC Tournament by averaging (15.3) points, (15.7) rebounds, and (3.7) blocks — which included a 24-point, 22-rebound performance in the semifinal against Grambling State.
Her final season was a full breakout. Williams-Holiday became one of the most dominant mid-major players in the country, averaging (19.2) points, (11.4) rebounds, and (2.7) blocks. She put up 18 points, 21 rebounds, and 7 blocks against SEC opponent Arkansas and dropped 16 points with 10 rebounds against Ole Miss. At one point, she recorded 12 consecutive double-doubles and led Jackson State to an (18–0) conference run — the first perfect SWAC season in program history. The Tigers repeated as champions and secured a No. 14 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
Then came the matchup with LSU. In the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, Williams-Holiday posted 15 points and 12 rebounds as Jackson State pushed the Tigers to the brink in a six-point loss that forced the nation to take notice.
In just three seasons, she left as the program’s all-time rebounding leader, ranked seventh in scoring, second in blocks, and led Jackson State to a (48–3) SWAC record, two tournament titles, and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Since 2000, she owns the highest career rebounding average of any SWAC player in that 25-year span, ranks second in career blocks per game, and finished with the third-highest career scoring average.
She went on to become the first player ever drafted into the WNBA from Jackson State — and the first HBCU player to be drafted in 20 years.
Ameshya Williams-Holiday didn’t just revive her career. She reshaped the standard for what HBCU basketball can produce. She showed that a player’s path doesn't have to be linear to be legendary. ✨

@IndianaFever What was the point of drafting her if you knew you were going to waive her due to limited roster space. Y’all did the same thing to Ameshya Williams-Holiday last season. Y’all draft these rookies just to take them off the board so other teams can not select them.
