Ask yourself why white southern American English doesn’t have a debate around whether it’s a separate language from English despite also having slight grammar differences to standardised English, but AAVE does.

Naaahh, you could argue that what is white supremacist is saying that when black people have a dialect that has slight grammar quirks (like a large amount English dialects do), that those dialects needs to be sectioned off and considered a distinct language to keep English “pure”

South Africans are engaging in white supremist rhetoric unknowingly. AAVE is a language just as Xhosa and Zulu are language. If you want to argue it’s a dialect, that same argument can be used for both Xhosa and Zulu.

They are exceptionally talented, so why feel the need to pretend speaking a dialect of English as well as a standard form of English makes you just as multilingual as Africans who cycle through multiple unrelated languages every day regularly. What are you trying to prove 😭

Sigh…. Considering the fact that I am a linguistics professor and researcher specializing in Black languaging practices, and I teach a course on African American language, let me repeat: AAL and English are different languages. “South African people be speaking” is NOT English.

@phumz_24 @UjuAnya English is partly derived from German and yet they are both considered distinct languages such that translation is required for understanding to occur. This same distinction is shared between American Standard English and Ebonics(AAVE).

Kev! What you’re describing is translanguaging (“codeswitching” from outside the speaker’s perspective). Black Americans also do this “weaving” beautifully in and out of African American language (AAL/AAVE) and North American English. You even did it right here on this tweet!😁😁
