I think the root of the problem is that publishers are buying self published slop that sells well without vetting it for quality. This book would probably not have made it through a traditional editing process, but Hachette just wanted a shortcut to a hit.

To write I stole time away from other jobs, time from my family, bleary eyed and full of love for the work.

I’m happy the book has been pulled too, but also worried some people are starting to assume writing is ai just cus it uses perfectly normal stylistic devices (like listing, the use of contrasts, using words strangely to convey voice, em dash etc). It’s making me paranoid

i don't think i'll ever agree with the "its inevitable just accept it"stance on ai. it's killing our planet. it's poisoning water. it's raising electricity bills for people who don't even use it. it's proven that people are getting less smart because of their reliance on it. it's actually quite avoidable and easy to not use. furthermore it steals and profits from actual people's hard word. hearing an ARTIST advocate that people should just roll over and accept ai is really disheartening.

Things I still want to know re: The "Shy Girl" Scandal 👇🏻
1. How did an AI-written manuscript escape the scrutiny of an agent, editor, and Big 5 publisher?
2. What methods were used to definitively determine the book was written using AI? (And I don't want to hear, "It's obvious!" I've worked with plenty of authors whose work I was suspicious of having been written using AI, but I'd still never go so far as to flat-out accuse them of having done so without actual proof, usually in the form of a baked-in prompt—which, yes, has happened before. So, I'd really like to know how Hachette actually determined this to be AI-generated beyond public outcry. Because if all it takes is a few witch hunters to yell, "AI SLOP!" then I'm sorry, but that's equally problematic.)
3. Did the publisher think the public was too stupid to notice, or is trad pub really *that* overworked/understaffed that they were unable to catch something so obvious, even after multiple rounds of edits?

Publishing houses and agents make you jump through 10,000 hoops if you are an untried author. But if you self-published a book that turns out to sell like hotcakes? Publishers will be DESPERATE to get their hands on it. And you get to skip past allll the hoops.
