In just 18 years, the U.S. total fertility rate (TFR) fell from a replacement level of 2.1 children per woman to a record low of 1.57.
How did we get here? Sometimes the obvious is hard to see.
The direct cause is the massive drop in childbearing among women in their 20s, which account for 78% of the overall decline.
