@solidangles I see your point. It does indeed seem easier to do in your head, even if it takes more steps than 'traditional' right-to-left subtraction.

@_patrickziegler If you’ve ever heard of something called “Vedic Math” they give a useful technique for subtracting from a power of 10: “all from nine and the last from ten.” And if you think about my first response to you, you can see why that technique works. Yay number sense! 🙂

@solidangles Fair enough. But it seems the technique doesn't really work if the second number is smaller but each of its digits are larger. E.g. 11111 - 2345 ------ 10000 - 1234 And now you have to go from right to left

@_patrickziegler I'd rather just do that one mentally! If it were 9999 - 1111 it would just be 8888, so 10000 - 1111 would be 8889. 🙂

@b0rk Not quite 10+ years, but I permanently switched to linux in 2016 and almost immediately exclusively used the commandline.

relatedly, I've been wondering if "use the command line as the primary way to manage your files" is a thing anyone is *starting* to do in 2022, or whether the only people who do it now started like 10+ years ago
