so I finally watched behind the scenes by funke akindele and honestly, i think the conversation around this movie needs a bit more honesty. yes, it’s emotional, relatable and well-acted. nobody can deny that funke akindele understands her audience better than most filmmakers in nollywood. the film taps into family pressure, entitlement and betrayal in a way many people will immediately connect with. that part works perfectly. but here’s the uncomfortable truth: the movie feels too safe. wt some point, it becomes clear that it isn’t trying to challenge storytelling, it’s trying to guarantee audience approval. the plot follows a formula we’ve already seen multiple times: a generous protagonist, ungrateful people, emotional chaos, then moral resolution. you can predict major turns long before they happen and that removes some of the tension the film could have had. the emotional scenes are powerful, yes, but sometimes they feel stretched just to pull tears rather than push the story forward. it almost feels like the film trusts emotion more than narrative depth. what makes this controversial for me is this: the movie’s massive success says more about nollywood audiences’ expectations than about cinematic innovation. we celebrate what moves us emotionally but are we demanding enough creativity from our biggest filmmakers? don’t get me wrong, it’s entertaining and very watchable. but I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking. it’s a polished, commercially smart film that knows exactly how to win hearts without taking real creative risks. my honest verdict: a strong crowd-pleaser, but not a bold evolution of nollywood storytelling. rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️
