When I explained to the passport control officer that I’m here in the Netherlands to speak at a tech conference, he stopped what he was doing, gave me the most genuine smile, and said that he was proud of me. And now I’m sort of crying, because I’m proud of myself, too.

Four years ago today my heart was stopped for an hour. My ribs were sawed open (I’m told they sprung the rib spreader shut at one point) and my ascending aorta was replaced with a fabric tube. I still somehow worry about stupid shit. Alas. #openheartsurgery
