Seeing that the 10th anniversary of math.stackexchange.com/q/952466/1543 is upon us, I was urged to add a cash prize to a solution of this problem. To make it inflation protected: the prize will be 24 bottles/cans of beer from a widely distributed Michigan Craft Brewery, or cash equivalent.

@BarbaraFantechi To be fair: that question is optional (quite a few letter writers just ignored it) and insofar as fake answers go, the guy can always just write "among research students I mentored" (the question asked about what the comparison group is, not expecting a numeric answer.)

Pet peeve: don't rank your student as "within the top 5%" when your sample size is 10. You are basically saying your student is only half a person.

@_qnlw I am very envious that style is the only problem your students have when writing maths. I'm not a native speaker, neither are most of my colleagues and students, and as long as their English has only one clear meaning I am happy. imgs.xkcd.com/comics/strunk_…

Welp, the customer portal now gives an estimated time to completion of about 975 years (yes, the page shows expected completion in year 3000). In the interest of my next 30 generations of progeny having internet access, I asked my wife to call another ISP.

A PSA if you are thinking about getting @metronetfiber : We called to set up service, was assured that it will be done in 2 weeks or less. A guy came out soon after, ran into some problems, gave up, and said we will be contacted. It has been 6 weeks, still no internet. (1/2)

Throughout they never initiated contact with us to provide us any update. We have to call, wait on hold, to find out that yet again, nothing is happening. The most that happened was a supposed "ticket" got opened in their system. Customer service? I think not. (2/2)

Okay, superglue is not supposed to react with latex, right? I am going to assume that the rather violent exothermic reaction that fused two of the fingers (of the glove) is because I had some contaminant on the glove. (I stripped it off as soon as I felt heat.)
