The decision to put that voicemail at the end, given the subject matter, has always been a big instance for me of "don't why they did this, but I LOVE it!"

Thought this was interesting: American farms were so productive in the 1870’s that food prices were falling rapidly and lead to the accelerated proletarianization of European peasants and their subsequent migration to the United States

@grapefruitism like im usually the first to whack colonizers but on the matter of a deeply antiblack culture appropriating from black culture i wouldnt be quick to point to colonization as the reason behind it hence why my questions

@grapefruitism which makes me doubt just how much of the appropriation is a result of colonization. also how much influence would black American soldiers have on foreign soil when they were discriminated against within their own ranks? koreanwarlegacy.org/chapters/afric…

@grapefruitism do you have any sources for this? the Philippines was occupied by U.S. for 48 years and Korea was under U.S. rule for 3 years based on a quick search. im sure Philippine music takes from black culture too but its most popular genre OPM isn’t nearly as blatant as kpop at ripoffs

The cultural influence of Black American music in East Asia predates the imperialism in question.

@_rafaelstar @grapefruitism i'm confused what that has to do with the argument though? the point isn't "it's okay to steal from (black) americans bc american military bad", it's moreso "imperialism and cultural influence is complex and messy and reducing it to 'stealing' isn't accurate or productive"
