I am visiting the @smithsoniannpg National Portrait Gallery and as I gazed upon portraits from ~1700, my thoughts kept going back to their durability. I am standing inches from a surface that an artist painted 300+ years ago and the colors and textures look crisp as the day they were painted. And now, with our advanced technology, we put digital images on a blockchain in the form of tokens that are so brittle that in less than five years (10 if you are generous) they will be gone, impossible to recreate or find. I think you have to be a technologist to appreciate just how transient NFTs are and how far they are from the notion of "my art is forever on the blockchain." I hope that in the coming years we will evolve the technology so it can be resilient like the paintings of yore, but for now, we surge on, wool firmly over our eyes, with NFT v0.1, a far cry from the durability of paint on canvas.
