This one is for all my followers who understand nynorsk... 😉 I'm feeling very lucky (and slightly petrified!) to have been awarded an @ERC_Research Starting Grant. We will investigate rapidly-changing Arctic sea ice thickness during the melt season @CIRFA_SFI @UiTNorgesarktis
UiT Norges arktiske universitet@UiTNorgesarktis

No skal @jclandy måle havisen frå verdsrommet! Og han får 2 millionar Euro frå EU for å gjere det. Les sak eller høyr podkast: uit.no/nyheter/artikk… @ERC_Research @erc_ncp @AvisenKhrono @forskningno

@dave_babb The Arctic science community has lost a giant and, more importantly, a wonderful person. This is such heartbreaking news. Been thinking of you, @jclandy, and others with connections to CEOS.

Still in shock & processing how to move forward. He led the program that gave me my first taste of Arctic science in high school & mentored me all the way to this upcoming final year of my PhD. Beyond being a visionary scientist he was a true family man, my heart breaks for them.

We're extremely sad to share the news of the passing of Dr. David Barber. He was one of Canada’s most influential and accomplished Arctic researchers and will be dearly missed. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. bit.ly/3OsgT3Y

I am delighted to annouce that the @NSF just awarded our STC center nsf.gov/news/special_r…, called Learning the Earth with Artificial Intelligence and Science (LEAP), on artifical intelligence and climate modeling. Many opportunities to come.

Overall, these results are encouraging for the future of Antarctic sea ice predictions. There are many remaining questions related to sea ice predicability, data assimilation, and Southern Ocean coupled processes. Please get in touch if you are interested in discussing more!

We found notable forecast errors in regions of oceanic deep convection and strong northward sea ice drift. Improving model representations of Southern Ocean mixing and sea ice dynamics will be critical for improving sea ice predictions.

Just shy of 4 years ago, my colleagues sampled this lunar looking ice surface in southern Hudson Bay. The ice was covered in sediment & too thick for the Amundsen to break through. This thick 'dirty' ice hadn't been observed before in Hudson Bay, so we dove into it.

Interested in how volcanic eruptions impact sea ice? Check out our new paper, led by @andrewp109 and with @drseaice. Hemispherically symmetric volcanic forcing leads to a highly asymmetric response in sea ice!

New paper out! agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20… In this work with @_the_iceman and @drseaice, we use the exciting new abundance of GCM large ensembles to show that the differing N vs. S Hemisphere response to Pinatubo is robust across models
