Hello all! In order to begin data analysis, we have closed survey submissions and will not be collecting any more sightings. A huge thank you to everyone who supported us and submitted red and grey squirrel sightings to The Urban Squirrel Survey. 🧵

Incredible News! Yesterday we received the 1 millionth record through Ireland's Citizen Science Portal. The record was for a Striped Ladybird and submitted by record Brian Power. This is a phenomenal achievement and level of recording made possible by our recorder network!

As always, red and grey squirrel sight sightings can be submitted through direct message (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), email (urbansquirrelsurvey@gmail.com) or through the National Biodiversity Data Centre website ( biodiversityireland.ie/.../the-urban-… ). 🌲📝 Have a lovely day!

Why do we need to know more about squirrels in urban areas? 🏙️🐿 With the spread of urbanisation, parks and urban green spaces are becoming important habitats for many Irish species, including squirrels. (1/3)

Recent studies suggest that urban areas may act as a refuge for the grey squirrel, which may hinder red squirrel re-establishment in towns, cities, and urban parks, and may act as a source for further grey squirrel spread in the future.
