@_zomg Fear exists because we believe there is an unknown world out there. If we believe there is nothing unknown, fear can be dispelled. However, I think there are far more unknown things today than there were in the 1970s, whether in the United States or Japan.

よく探しましたね。そういえば60年代、70年代の児童書って、怖い絵がいっぱいありました。あれ、どこへいっちゃったんでしょうね?
紅夏@kouka_selica

@ayanakajima3 70年代~の児童書にも恐怖を煽るような絵が描かれてましたから、 子供から大人まで”怖いもの見たさ”な感じで流行したんですね世紀末😓 子供心に”予言”を半ば信じていた者😅

Alright, my fellow PC Engine enthusiasts over in Japan. I have a question. I'm a bit obsessed with Namco's Final Lap Twin, if only for the RPG "Quest" mode. It's short, it's sweet, and I genuinely enjoyed this part of the game a great deal. For those who have never played this part of the game, it's essentially Dragon Quest but instead of fighting monsters, you race in random encounters. Now, those of you who have played this game likely know that if you go searching in conspicuous areas, you can find rare gears (you have to search to find the best engine in the giant abandoned warehouse near the end of the game.) These special searchable areas were always placed in, well, conspicuous areas. Like an empty single patch of grass between trees and mountains. Even if there's no gear or item hidden there, you'll at least get some flavor text about a lizard running away or finding an old shoe informing you that you're on the right track by checking these areas. (It's very subtle hints like these that set these old games apart. No yellow paint here.) During a recent playthrough of this game, I noticed a grassy area that I had never really noticed before and this was like my fifth or sixth time playing through this game. I also noticed that it required the kickboard to access, which is another item you obtain near the very end of the game. This is something that should be on @CuttingRoomWiki but it's not (yet). And I can see why just about everyone has missed it. This little patch of accessible grass is near the very start of the game, something you're going to give little consideration to once you're endgame. But I remembered this little so I went to it to check it out. This is what I found. Now, in order to "save" your game, you have to put in a password and the password has exactly this many characters (minus one!) displayed here, and all these characters are accessible on the password screen. So that's what I tried. Nothing. I shifted the entire password over a character to account for the missing character and again, nothing. Maybe, just maybe, this password works on Japanese version of Final Lap Twin or one of you over in Japan has encountered this too -- or, God willing, you're the actual engineer who programmed this game. It's possible! I just recently found out I'm mutuals with the programmer behind the legendary Coryoon for the PC-Engine (@freeman_HAL) so anything is possible.

Similarly, my first girlfriend became a convicted felon cause she embezzled $500k+ from the town we grew up in. She was also busted cause she went on vacation, and her setup required her to issue a check to a fence. The fence didn’t get the memo, showed up, and confused the hell out of the substitute. Anyway, sure know how to pick ‘em…

@markgadala @DarylSurat You missed the funny bit: before the bounty was put on him, a lawyer declared him as open season, and would defend anyone who assaulted him pro bono. He was assaulted multiple times, often when coming out of the hospital or police stations

This story is insane: • american streamer goes to south korea to do content like a lunatic • dances on a memorial for wwii sex slaves, plays north korean propaganda on the subway, throws ramen at a store owner like a psychopath • the country puts a BOUNTY on his location • a former korean navy seal finds him and knocks him out cold on a live stream • he gets arrested, charged with 8 counts including deepfake sexual violence crimes • shows up to his first court date an hour late, hungover, in a maga hat • calls south korea a "us vassal state" in open court • prosecution asks for 3 years hard labor • his mom files a petition begging the judge for leniency • his last words before sentencing: "i haven't done anything to offend anyone during these proceedings, which shows i learned my lesson" • judge sentences him anyway, has him handcuffed in the courtroom on the spot • and when he finally gets deported back to america, he has to register as a sex offender

In the early 1980s -- talking 1980 to the very day that "Air" and "Jordan" were first introduced to the consumer market -- Nike was just another generic shoe brand.
