މިހާރު ޢަމަލުކުރަމުންދާ ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީގައި މައްސަލަތަކެއް އެބަހުރިކަމާއި، އެކަންކަން އިޞްލާޙުކުރަންޖެހޭކަން އެއީ އަޅުގަނޑުމެން އެންމެންވެސް ޤަބޫލުކުރާ ޙަޤީޤަތެއް. އަދި އެކަންކަން ހައްލުކުރުމަށް ކުރެވެމުންދާ މަސައްކަތުގެ ތެރެއިން ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީއަށް 3 އިސްލާހެއް ގެނައުމަށް މަޖިލީހަށް ހުށަހެޅުމަށް ސަރުކާރުންވަނީ ނިންމާފަ. 1. ރިޔާސީ އިންތިޚާބާއި މަޖިލިސް އިންތިޚާބު އެކުގައި ބޭއްވުން. 2. ޖުޑީޝަލް ސަރވިސް ކޮމިޝަން އެކުލެވިގެންވާ ގޮތް ބަދަލުކުރުން. 3. ރައްޔިތުންގެ މަޖިލީހުގެ މެންބަރުންގެ ޢަދަދު އިތުރުވަމުންދާ މައްސަލައަށް ހައްލެއް ގެނައުން. މި އިޞްލާޙުތަކުގެ ތެރެއިން ރިޔާސީ އިންތިޚާބާއި މަޖިލިސް އިންތިޚާބު އެކުގައި ބޭއްވުމަށްޓަކައި ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީއަށް ގެންނަންޖެހޭ އިޞްލާޙުގެ މަސައްކަތް މިވަގުތު ކުރިއަށް މިގެންދަނީ ކީއްވެގެންތޯ ކުރެވޭ ސުވާލުގެ ޖަވާބު ވަރަށް ސާފު. ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީއަށް ގެންނަން ނިންމާފައިވާ އިޞްލާޙުތަކުގެ ތެރެއިން، މި އިޞްލާޙަކީ، އެއަށް ޢަމަލުކުރަން ފެށުމުގެ ކުރިން ރައްޔިތުންގެ ފެންނަ ނުފެންނަ ވޯޓެއް ނެގުމަށް ސީދާ ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީއިން ލާޒިމްކުރާ އިޞްލާޙެއް. އަދި ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީއަށް ދެން ގެންނަންޖެހޭ އިޞްލާޙުތަކަކީ އެއަށް ޢަމަލުކުރުމަށްޓަކާ ރައްޔިތުންގެ ފެންނަ ނުފެންނަ ވޯޓެއް ނެގުމަށް ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީ ލާޒިމްކުރާ އިޞްލާޙުތަކެއް ނޫން. ލޯކަލް ކައުންސިލް އިންތިޚާބަށްޓަކައި މުޅި ދިވެހިރާއްޖެ ތައްޔާރުވަމުންދާ ވަގުތު، މި ފެންނަ ނުފެންނަ ވޯޓާއި ލޯކަލް ކައުންސިލްތަކުގެ އިންތިޚާބުގެ ވޯޓުލުން އެކުއެކީގައި ބޭއްވުމަކީ، މުޅި ރާއްޖޭގައި ފެންނަ ނުފެންނަ ވޯޓެއް ނެގުމަށް ހިނގާނެ ޚަރަދުން އެތައް މިލިއަން ރުފިޔާއެއް ސަލާމަތްކުރެވޭނެ ކަމެއް. މުޅި ރާއްޖޭގައި މިފަދަ ވޯޓެއް ވަކިން ބާއްވާނަމަ އެންމެ ކުޑަމިނުން 80 ވަރަކަށް މިލިއަން ރުފިޔާ ހޭދަވާނެ. ކައުންސިލް އިންތިޚާބާއެކު މިވޯޓު ބާއްވާނަމަ އެތައް ގުނައެއް ޚަރަދު ކުޑަވެ، ދައުލަތުގެ ބަޖެޓަށް ލުއިވާނެ. ޤާނޫނުއަސާސީއަށް ދެން ގެންނަން ބޭނުންވާ އިޞްލާޙުތައްވެސް މާލަސްތަކެއް ނުވެ ރައްޔިތުންގެ މަޖިލީހަށް ސަރުކާރުގެ ފަރާތުން ހުށަހަޅާނެ. މިހާރު ހިނގަމުންދަނީ މިކަމުގެ އެންމެ ފަހުގެ މަޝްވަރާތައް.

I agree that there are issues in the Bill submitted to Majlis. It is for this reason that we reviewed the Bill and submitted important amendments. As with most Bills, details will have to be refined and concerns will have to be addressed through constructive dialogue and input from stakeholders during committee stage. As for the definitions, we have submitted amendments to clarify vague terminology, including the definition of electronic media. (Please check the last point in the Press statement from AG office on 10/09/2025). Our intention in submitting the amendments is to ensure that there is no unnecessary intrusion in media at the same time protect the public from harm and disinformation. I believe that the bill establishes broad and necessary principles to address pressing issues of accountability, misinformation, and the responsible handling of information in the media space. These challenges are real and cannot be ignored. I believe that having a legislative foundation is a starting point.

On 23 August 1950, Sheikh Abdul Gayoom Ibrahim was appointed Attorney General. With the formal establishment of the Attorney General’s Office on 25 August 1950, he became the first Attorney General to serve under the Office, marking the beginning of its 75 year journey. #AGO75

On 25 August 2025, the Attorney General’s Office marks its 75th Anniversary. In the days ahead, we will reflect on the history of this institution and how it has developed into what it is today. Did you know that the Maldives had Attorney Generals even before the Office was formally established and before the post of Attorney General was officially created? Records show two individuals serving between 1900 and 1932. The 1932 Constitution created the post of Attorney General, while the Office itself was established later, gradually shaping the institution we know today. #AGO75

The inauguration of Justice Building Annex is a significant step forward in tangibly addressing a long-standing concern within the judiciary. With the relocation of the Criminal Court and Drug Court to this spacious modern facility, the criminal justice system will now be better equipped to reduce case backlogs, strengthen judicial efficiency, and deliver timely justice for all.
