F*ck it...
I took my uncle's brick & mortar business from $8k/month to $25k/month
Using things I learned on Twitter...
Here's how:
My uncle owns an old brick and mortar store. Before covid he was CRUSHING it. Bentley, big house, etc. etc.
COVID crushed him.
Decided to try and help using stuff I learned on Twitter and once he made these changes his sales sky rocketed
Here's what I did:
1. Invested in a cash machine for the store
I viewed the problem like a marketing funnel. I had to figure out what part of the funnel was failing
After spending a few days at his store I realized:
The foot traffic OUTSIDE his store was great
People just weren't entering his store
So, how do we solve this problem?
Well I didn't see any cash machines nearby, so...
I got him to invest in a cash machine and put a sign outside saying "Free Cash Machine Inside"
On the top of the machine I got him to put an offer for his services
Foot traffic increased basically overnight
2. He installed an "Amazon Locker" outside
He's had salesman come into his store trying to put Amazon lockers outside of his store for a while now
I told him to let them do it
Why?
- They pay him about $1000 a year in "rent" to be there
- It increases the foot traffic. People will drop off their packages and see his store
Win win
You've probably seen the lockers, they look like this
3. Upgraded his sandwich board
I put a better offer on the sandwich board (instead of a random service promo I turned it into a "free taster". Got an INSANE amount of traffic into his store because of this)
And I changed the placement of the board.
Before, he had the board right outside of his store.
I spoke to the guy who owns the store a few doors down (which is closer to the main street with a ton of cars & people passing) and he didn't have a problem with us putting a board outside his store.
My uncle is good friends with him and they refer customers to each other all the time so it wasn't too hard.
4. Overhauled his Google business page
His Google business page was super outdated so it wasn't rocket science but I simply:
1. Updated the pictures
2. Got some old customers to leave reviews (went from 15 reviews to 67)
3. Replied to all of the reviews
4. Filled in all the details Google ask for (they promote businesses who give as much detail as possible)
5. Changed a few of the keywords around
He went from ranked #15 to like #5 pretty quickly (gunning for #1 in the area!)
5. Increased opening time by 1 hour
After observing the store for a few days I realized:
Because he's so close to a major train station he gets a TON of foot traffic coming past his store around 5:30 - 6:30pm from people who just finished work.
And he closes at 5...
It sounds so simple but simply pushing the closing time to 6:30 resulted in a TON of extra sales that he wouldn't have seen otherwise
6. Put a girl at the till
He had some girl fresh out of college working at the back. He was convinced he had to be at the tills because the customers wanted to talk to HIM
Not the case lol
She's super friendly and conversational and I noticed that after talking to her once
Put this girl on the till and started letting her serve customers
Saw results basically the next day
Big lesson in business is to let people do what they're good at. Don't grow an ego or think you can do it better.
If your staff aren't better than you, why even hire them in the first place?
...
I'll end it there
Did a few more things that made a massive difference so if this gets some interest I'll drop a pt. 2
