Leaving people on the streets without treatment isn't compassion. It's cruelty. We pushed to bring psychiatric beds and mental health services back to North County for the first time in decades. Not just funding. Not just talk. Real facilities. Real treatment. Real care. If someone is struggling with addiction or mental illness, they deserve a path to recovery, not a tent on the sidewalk.

Questions already sent to the county about this: -Who is the independent auditor and how much is the county paying for this? -Will the report be public? -How will the independent auditor be working with internal staff?

It’s not fair. It’s not compassionate. It’s not progressive. We need to do better.

“The claim that a lack of state funds explains these failures is unconvincing. The state…allocates $2 billion each year …intended to serve those with low-level offenses. These funds are poorly spent, essentially untracked, and overdue for reinvestment” cjcj.org/reports-public…

HHAP remains the most effective tool cities have to reduce unsheltered homelessness and clear encampments. That’s why I’m joining @CABigCityMayors to fight for full funding in this year’s state budget.

A milestone worth celebrating: Since 2023, Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention program grantees have helped more than 100,000 Californians move from homelessness into permanent housing! @CAbcsh @Cal_ICH

Hope House is a sober shelter, and in the first six months since opening, it has achieved an impressive 78% success rate in moving residents into supportive housing or other long-term recovery programs.  Hope House ensures that people struggling with addiction aren’t surrounded by the same drugs and alcohol they are trying to leave behind. The program, led by the Salvation Army, centers on sobriety and recovery.  As Supervisor Matt Dorsey said during our tour, many problems begin to solve themselves when drugs and alcohol are removed from the equation. We still have work to do on our streets, but we will keep doubling down on solutions that are working.

Anyone who has tried to help a loved one struggling with severe addiction knows — it’s long past time for a hard conversation. We need to talk about how we can compel care for those who are so deep in the throes of addiction that they can’t make a rational decision about their own well-being and are having an outsized impact on our emergency services and everyone else’s quality of life. It’s not compassionate or progressive to leave people to suffer and die on our streets — and as any former addict will tell you, there is no recovery without accountability.
