Mostly I'm (still) just thinking about Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Marathon discourse died because it's both "old news" and still somehow "too new to review". I feel like Bungie made their own discourse no mans land.

First impressions: Crimson Desert seems pretty cool. Definitely wears its influences on its sleeves. A lot of Zelda, a lot of Skyrim. And I clearly just Red Dead'd out of a tent.

There's more love for Star Trek in each single frame of this AI music video than anything made by Paramount for the last 20 years. youtube.com/watch?v=a4mwr7…

Every game podcast: "I plan to check out [game] later on, after it gets good. But other people should keep playing it while it sucks. To keep the business going. So they can fix it up. For me. For when I'm ready. I really don't have time for video games anymore, anyway."

Gamers: We don’t want this. Devs: It’s not for you. Oh, my bad. Who’s it for then? The invisible demographic? The mythical “modern audience” that only exists in PowerPoint slides?

"This ship cannot sink!" "She's made of iron, sir. I assure you, she can. And she will. It is a mathematical certainty." [The Highguard offices, I assume...]

I think it's an unexpected drawback of good back-compat support and live service games on console: A brand new XBOX or PS used to be a wasteland with only 4 games to pick. Now a new game competes with basically every game ever released, plus the forever games. Good luck!

Publishers still hoping "I CAN'T WAIT to play [blank]!" It made sense 10+ years ago when games released at a slower pace and rarely became forever games. But 2026 is full of forever games. I CAN wait to play your game. 2000s-era hype-driven game dev is dead. There is no hype.
Geoff Keighley@geoffkeighley

A large part of the Wildlight Entertainment team that worked on @PlayHighguard has been laid off, just 16 days after release. An unfortunate, brutal and sad outcome for a game I enjoyed in early play tests.

I can't believe they used THAT version of Sweet Child of Mine for the latest Gundam trailer...

More flaws does not equal a better character. Also, the story is full of Himmel’s flaws: he’s naive, arrogant, self obsessed and vain. The whole point is that Frieren doesn’t see his good side until after he’s already dead. If he actually sucked, it wouldn’t be so tragic.
CritiCold🔻@ColdCriti

One way I think Frieren could have done something more interesting with its premise was if Himmel was a more flawed/grey character and the idealized picture of him we see in Frieren's memories was a distortion showing how the passage of time leaves only the most positive memories

Is it ignorant smugness or a reverse "You should totally try a pixie cut, it would look so good on you"? REMINDER that advice only ever applies correctly to the people giving it. Also REMINDER that most people giving advice have no interest in your results.

Reminder that using AI to write code is an incredibly bad idea still, and anyone advocating for it is either incompetent or evil. It's just as dumb as letting AI write the laws. It's about logic, not about typing.

Of all things, this is actually the most Trek thing they've done so far. Sets, props, matte paintings can all be repurposed in Star Trek! Hell, they used the EXACT SAME Bird of Prey explosion in 3 movies in a row! But they had the artistic sensibility to flip it horizontally.
Sacred Cow Shipyards@SCShipyards

Apparently Bajor (SA) and Kiley 279 (SNW) are, in fact, the same planet. Ooooor the producers behind Starfleet Academy are such lazy slobs they just grabbed any old "planet" asset and shoved it in, assuming the fans wouldn't notice. Which is funny, given Trekkies.

A perfectly good story already exists in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, a book written like a horror movie featuring Darth Maul doing all the things you want to see him do, memorable characters and a great visual concept of the force that would be perfect for the screen...
