A lot of people today got their (extremely) loose introduction to ABA history through the iconic Will Ferrell movie Semi-Pro. 😂 When John Y. Brown III joined the show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ABA-NBA merger, Blake had to ask: Did Semi-Pro bring back memories, or was it just straight-up trash? John’s answer? A little bit of both. He said he, his mother, and legendary sportswriter Billy Reed went to see the movie when it came out. Afterward, Billy asked why Hollywood felt the need to make up stories when the real stories from the ABA were even crazier and funnier. John added that’s one reason the new Soul Power documentary on Prime Video is so important. For many people, Semi-Pro became their introduction to ABA history—but Soul Power helps tell the real story behind one of basketball’s most unforgettable leagues.
