Aerial view of the vast beach and tidal channel at Wells-next-the-Sea on the north Norfolk coast. The huge expanse of sand here is shaped by the powerful tides and shifting currents of The Wash and the North Sea, which constantly move sandbanks and channels along this coastline. At low tide the sea retreats a remarkable distance, exposing wide sand flats, shallow lagoons and tidal creeks that attract walkers, paddleboarders and huge numbers of seabirds. The channel visible in the foreground can fill surprisingly quickly as the tide turns — something Wells has long been known for. The colourful beach huts backed by pinewoods have become one of Norfolk’s best-known coastal scenes.
