@JamWaterhouse @Ieaguedj @Romyliad Would be great @JamWaterhouse for context if you also looked into and reported on the lack of safe and legal routes provided by states to people. If these existed, smugglers wouldn’t have a job. And also that the UK (+ Europe) gets a fraction of the global migrants at its shores.

A journey driven by the desperation of those making it. UK Ministers promised to “smash the gangs” with small boat crossings to the UK from France, but the first six months of this year saw a record 20,000 make the journey. With🎥 @Ieaguedj @Romyliad & Rihab Latrache

@AndrewWJHarding @ProducerKathy @BBCr4today Thanks for taking time to reply. At least in the piece we mainly heard sobbing and he wasn’t given space to explain why he resorted to a smuggler / why he had to take this route. I didn’t hear anything about what other route might have been available to him.

@abdarcy @ProducerKathy @BBCr4today Thanks Abby. We spoke at length to Sara’s father in April and again more recently. Completely agree on need for context which I feel we provided. Key issue is status of two other children who were born and raised in Europe but have no right to stay.

@AndrewWJHarding @ProducerKathy And where is the context? Why are we swallowing state narratives hook line and sinker? States blaming smugglers nicely shifts focus away from the many thousands of unnecessary deaths caused by lack of safe and legal access to protection. Safe pathways = no need for smuggling.

Two years since the #Melilla border crossing was turned into a death trap, 70 people are still missing, 27 known dead. As part of @BorderForensic investigation, we echo the demands addressed to Spain and Morocco: truth, identification, release & justice. 👉borderforensics.org/investigations…

Europe's “anti-smuggling” laws go on trial today! EU's highest court reviews the so-called Facilitators Package which wrongly criminalizes people on the move & humanitarian assistance. The laws must adhere to human rights, assure protection for people on the move & end penalties.

1st: Acknowledge refugees 2nd: Listen to them 3rd: Tell about their stories 4th: Welcome them 5th: Include them in all steps The list of kindness towards refugees goes on endlessly. I wrapped their stories and faces around me because I live with them ever—since I was born.
Refugees In Libya@RefugeesinLibya

Today in Frankfurt, our first mobile exhibition showcasing the work of refugee’s human rights defenders in Libya will begin. This is the beginning of many European cities that we plan to cover in the coming months. Refugees are human beings, they have dreams, and hopes!

Dear politicians at the @EU_Commission if you play deaf I will come to your face such that I am seen and those in the wretches that you have created in Libya, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. If you play blind then hear me out. If you are both, I will use other means 1/3

It’s the death knell to the right to asylum. Today, @Europarl_EN voted in favor of the pact on #MigrationEU. The reforms lock in a deadly, tried & failed system of detention & externalization w/ racial profiling & pushbacks. We'll continue to fight for human rights at the border!

Applaus, Europa, auf #GEAS, das Faschismus umarmt, mehr Menschen im Mittelmeer zum Tod verurteilt, das Gewalt an den Grenzen normalisiert und Rechte von Fliehenden abschafft!
