All the earlier historical document just referred them as Roman, but believe whatever helps you sleep at night.

Eastern part didn’t fall until the Muslim Ottoman Turks invaded in 1453 'Byzantine Empire' was coined after its demise; citizens used the term 'Roman Empire' & called themselves 'Romans'.

@AlexThe9In @Chanresists Dude, the first university was religious one, it had a masjid. The fact I have to see the word madrassa is literally telling that whoever wrote this is a racist. Madrassa means "school" in Arabic. Why use the Arabic word school here? Trying to rebrand it as not a university.

@abdul_eb @Chanresists Historians agree “university” (w/ corporate structure, multiple faculties, & secular elements) is European medieval invention. Qarawiyyin only became a university in 1963. Before that, it was a leading madrasa issuing traditional qualifications (ijazah), not “university degrees”.

@abdul_eb @Chanresists Mohammed V University in Rabat was founded in 1957, pre-dates Al-Qarawiyyin’s 1963 transformation from a Muslim school into a university by royal decree, when it was first reorganized into a university structure, with faculties, degrees, etc. & importantly not just Muslim studies
