He memorized recipes the way other kids memorized cartoons. The bakery wasn’t just where he grew up. It was where he belonged. Fifty years later, my hands ache before the morning rush. I move slower now. I can’t carry the business the way I once did. But Danny can. He runs the ovens. He greets every customer by name. He remembers who likes extra icing, who needs their bread sliced thin, who just lost a spouse and needs a kind word with their coffee. People walk in and ask, “Is Danny baking today?” And if he is, they smile. “If Danny’s baking, I’ll wait,” they say. “He makes it better.” They were wrong all those years ago.
