@ToghralBalkhi Chicago is good for buying, but it sucks for renting. There’s also a decently sized Central Asian population in Chicagoland and quite a few restaurants!

I wish people would realize that Chicago is a Midwestern city with Midwestern incomes. The average Chicagoan is far more rent burdened than the average DC resident when you compare median rents of both cities against their median incomes.

@DeepDishEnjoyer @abelincoln__ @dietbrisk I will say I'm a little surprised by how little apartment prices change outside of loop—appt. that would be 2.3k in streeterville seems to be ~1.7-2k pretty much anywhere w/an L stop. otoh, 1.7-2k for a lovely one bedroom in a nice neighborhood with decent transit is fine

@abelincoln__ Idk why north east Americans don’t move to Chicago. It’s 1/4 of the price and super clean

@WHaidaryar Claiming that Nowruz—a holiday that’s celebrated across three continents, belongs to a single ethnic group, is the epitome of culture vulturism.

@WHaidaryar Nowruz and Yalda don’t belong to Tajiks. They are Zoroastrian holidays that are celebrated from Albania to Central Asia & Northern South Asia. Last time I checked, I speak the closest living language to Avestan & my ancestors were Zoroastrian. Thanks, next.

Turkey has been appropriating Pashtun culture and clothing for YEARS while at the same time alienating Pashtuns and Afghan people in general so that they can seem more “European.”

Half of the “affordable” apartments in Hyde Park are run by Ivy, which is literally a slumlord. More than 4 of my classmates at UChicago who rented from them had their roofs collapse, let alone had roach and mice infestations.
Peter@dietbrisk

@DeepDishEnjoyer yea rent in luxury apartments is as bad as dc. no i live by the lake, everywhere else is 🪳 slumland.

pushed and gentrified out of their neighborhoods. It’s not just “the popular neighborhoods.” It’s also Albany Park, Avondale, Woodlawn, Bridgeport, Uptown, and Pilsen. These areas are gentrifying bc people in the city who make $50-$70k a year can’t afford to live in closer-in.
