Hote take 🔥: Building a great business is NOT about finding a great idea! It’s about finding a problem that hasn’t been solved and having an idea-creating machine to iterate through solutions. open.substack.com/pub/aberberick…

The root problem often has nothing to do with my envisioned solution. When I have a problem in the modern world, I often try to fix it surgically - move to a new place, take this medication/supplement, work harder, numb the pain. But point solutions don’t work when there’s a systematic issue. I must solve problems at the appropriate source level; otherwise, like a snake eating its tail, my solutions end up causing the problems they intend to solve. The challenge with the surgical approach is that the output ends up being designed to the inputs. If I consume or need x (people, place, or thing) to function, I will design a life that only functions with x. The seeds get sown on loose soil. If I can function regardless of my inputs, then I am resilient to circumstance.

People in startups are generally insecure (myself included), so we optimize for the most optically visible thing that’s easy to compare to others - hours worked. Beyond a certain threshold, this has a de minimis correlation to success. The best people can do in 1 hour what others take 100 hours to do. Leverage through mental clarity is the only thing that matters. This doesn’t mean don't work hard, but it does mean don't compromise your mental leverage for a marginal hour of work. Sleep, exercise, diet, good relationships, mental health…. these all yield better compounding results than the 36-hour work binge. Trust me, I’ve been on both sides of the aisle on this one.

There is no luck and no timing. Timing doesn’t matter. What matters is listening and responding to the times.

The big philosophical paradoxes are only paradoxes because the question is asked at a different scale than the answer. Do I have free will? From the scale of my individual life and those around me, of course, I do. From the statistical scale of my nation & society, probably not.

For any sufficiently advanced system, the utility of the system will be constrained by our ability to ask questions, not the system’s ability to answer them.

🌶️Some Spicy Takes: 1. Trust and relationships don’t scale with compute — most other functions do. 2. The U.S. won’t lose the AI race because of models — it will lose it because it can’t move atoms. 3. Web3 isn’t about crypto. It’s what happens when the internet can act on its own. 4. Abundance creates scarcity — of buyers. 5. Thinking is no longer scarce — meaning must move elsewhere. 6. The attention economy collapses when audiences stop believing that anything they see is real — even when it feels real. 7. Cities won’t decline because of affordability — they’ll decline because they stop being necessary. Curious to learn more? Check out my latest post: substack.com/home/post/p-18…

Most of us don’t lack willpower—we lack belief that change is possible. We wait until we hit rock bottom. Until crisis forces us to move. But what if we didn’t have to? I wrote something about how to change—before life makes you. Read it here: open.substack.com/pub/aberberick…
