In a recent interview, The Weeknd reportedly opened up about how his relationship with Drake fell apart.
“Back then, before I really blew up, Drake was already a superstar,” he said. “He was one of the first major artists to post my music and publicly support me. We really believed we were going to be the two artists that took Toronto to another level.”
He continued, “At one point he wanted me to sign with OVO, but I turned it down because I wanted to stay independent. I think that created a little tension between us early on.”
Speaking on the music side of things, he added, “As time went on, the comparisons became nonstop. People kept saying he was adapting parts of my sound for his R&B records, especially after I helped on some of those early songs. Behind the scenes, that created disagreements and distance between us.”
The singer also addressed the rumors involving Bella Hadid. “After everything happened, the Bella situation just made things colder. Once personal feelings get involved, relationships change.”
When asked if he still respects Drake, he replied, “Always. No matter what happened, I’ll never ignore what he did for me early in my career.”
