Volunteer review Ecuador Quito Makaio Waldrop Program Dates: March 9th - April 3rd (2026) Volunteered at: A school and nursing home 1- How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country? The local ABV Coordinator was incredibly nice and supportive. They checked in on me daily and provided me with suggestions on where to go, what to do, and how to keep myself safe. They taught me numerous regional Ecuadorian expressions and I felt at home. The support here has been perfect. The students and teachers at the school were glad to see me and asked me to make lesson plans. They called me “professor” and gave me funny nicknames like “pelo de champiñón” and were excited to see me every day. The support at the nursing home was great too. The assistants there kept me busy and we had great conversations. I loved that they treated me like a peer. 2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced? The most surprising thing I experienced was noticing that I can blend very well in Quito, I’m racially ambiguous so I can pass as Ecuadorian as long as I don’t speak English. Another surprising thing that I experienced was the lack of mosquitos. There were almost no mosquitos here and I felt that was a nice positive. 3- What was most difficult to experience? The most difficult thing for me to experience was seeing the elderly deteriorate in real time. It was genuinely an ordeal to do my best to help them when they were obviously not in the best condition. I maintained my usual positive spirits but over the weeks I saw few of them start to not be able to speak as well or clearly or seem weaker than before. They lost their jolly spirits in such a short period of time. Nursing homes are a sad place and being able to talk to some of the older adults and understand them really gave them life and personality that otherwise might be unrecognized. It’s sad I watched them lose that charm over time. 4- Any tips for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations) I would bring hiking boots, extra hand sanitizer, a fake wallet and phone, good running shoes, an extra towel or two for drying off after showering, and a speaker. All of these I feel are super necessary since I went on more hikes than I thought I’d go on. Fake items will help deceive robbers so you can flee. Good running shoes are just good in general to help get your cardio up at this elevation. I recommend multiple towels since it is more humid than where I normally live so things dry slower. A speaker would have been great since playing music for the kids would have kept them more engaged and entertained during the class and allowed them to absorb more of the English language. 5-Other things volunteers should know: The Spanish accent from Quito is very neutral while the Spanish accent from the coast is thicker and harder to understand. They aspirate the “s” and have a slight Venezuelan airiness to it. For food, the Ecuadorians eat all the more obscure parts of animals like the neck and kidneys and livers. Also, expect a variety of fruits that you’ve never seen or tried before. Food in general will be lighter and nothing is really spicy or fried. There are lots of soups and lots of rice dishes with lentils or beans and some basic protein like chicken or pork or shrimp. Also, in Quito, the water is not drinkable but you can brush your teeth with it. I have been brushing my teeth with it every day and have been fine at least at this location. youtu.be/6AOL0r2GbeE

🌍 Just wrapped up an unforgettable 4 weeks volunteering in Quito, Ecuador with ABV (March 9–April 3)! I split my time between a local school and nursing home. The ABV coordinator was incredible — checking in daily, sharing safety tips, teaching me Ecuadorian expressions, and making me feel totally at home. The school kids and teachers were so welcoming (they called me “professor” and nicknamed me “pelo de champiñón” 😂), and the nursing home staff treated me like a peer with great conversations. Biggest surprises? I blended right in as a local (until I spoke English!) and there were almost zero mosquitoes — huge bonus! The hardest part was watching the elderly residents slowly decline. It was emotional, but connecting with them and bringing some joy made it meaningful. Quick tips for future volunteers: Hiking boots & good running shoes (you’ll need them at this elevation!) Extra hand sanitizer, towels, portable speaker, and a fake wallet/phone for safety My host family was the best — private room & bathroom, delicious fresh meals (lots of soups, rice, beans, and new fruits), and super secure building. Favorite memories: swinging at 13,000 ft, paintball with the group, and nights cooking, playing cards, and laughing with my German friends while swapping travel stories. Huge thanks to the entire ABV team — professional, caring, and supportive from day one (even when my flight got canceled last minute). I’d recommend this program to anyone wanting to volunteer abroad! Would do it all over again in a heartbeat. 🇪🇨 #ABVVolunteer #QuitoEcuador abroaderview.org

Volunteer in Ecuador Quito Makaio W. teaching program I'm considering the English teaching volunteer program in northern Quito because I'm a native English speaker who's seen non natives teach English in Latin America with heavy accents. I've wanted to expand my passion for teaching in my native English accent and utilize the Spanish I've acquired over the years to help students learn the universal language. Additionally, Ecuador is a new country for me and my first time in the Southern Hemisphere. I would like to experience the culture, the food, and increased altitude lifestyle there, coming from someone who lives in Denver. abroaderview.org

Volunteer Emily T. Nurse program in Mongolia 🇲🇳 Ulaanbaatar I am a US-trained and licensed Registered Nurse, currently living in Beijing, China. I am posted here due to my husband's job at the U.S. Embassy, and as such, I am not able to work on the local economy in China given my diplomatic visa status. I am very passionate about working as an RN and found the Mongolia volunteer nurse option with A Broader View. abroaderview.org #volunteer #volunteering #gapyear #travel #mongolia #abroaderview #nurse #nurses #trip

Volunteer review Margaret G. in Peru Cusco women's shelter program. My experience with ABV was wonderful and I am very glad I invested time and money. I loved my host Maria Elena and was happy to get to live life as a regular Peruvian for a week in her home. Daily lunches with her family and excursions with her and my Spanish teacher were a highlight. Being able to connect with the girls at Women's Protection Center was an incredible experience. It was meaningful to be able to provide some much-needed warmth and attention to them as well as a positive change in their monotonous daily routine. They are an inspiration to me, and I hope I was able to be an inspiration to them as well. I will remember my time with them fondly. abroaderview.org #peru #cusco #abroaderview #volunteer #gapyear #esl #trips #womensupport #impacttrravel #VolunteerAbroad

Volunteer Margaret George in Peru 🇵🇪 Cusco at the Women's Support Program. I am considering the women's empowerment program in Cusco, Peru. Primarily this is because I will already be in Cusco the week prior to my requested volunteer date. But I have been wanting to go on another volunteer trip; I have previously volunteered in both Lima and Guatemala over a decade ago. I am very passionate about women's issues, in particular financial empowerment and have dedicated a lot of my pro bono financial advising hours over the years to that cause locally. abroaderview.org #volunteer #gapyear #volunteering #abroaderview #womensupportingwomen #peru #cusco #perucusco

Volunteer review Tyler D in Peru Cusco at the Dental Program. Had an incredible time volunteering in Cusco with ABV! My coordinator and online support made volunteering a breeze—built strong connections with the dental staff, assisted with patient care, and even helped at a kindergarten dental exam. Loved exploring Cusco’s rich Inca history and stunning sites like Machu Picchu! Highly recommend ABV for volunteering and adventure! #TravelWithPurpose #CuscoAdventures #VolunteerAbroad Accommodation & More: Stayed at Maria’s, where I had a comfy private room, hot showers, and access to a kitchen. Her delicious, hearty meals were a highlight! Felt super safe with double-locked gates, and Maria’s warmth made me feel like family. #HomeAwayFromHome #PeruVibes Favorite Memory: My second day in Cusco! A city tour melted away my nerves with Incan architecture, churches, historical sites, and feeding alpacas. Pure excitement took over! (Machu Picchu was a close second!) #CuscoMagic #IncaHistory ABV Support: Amazing! Sarah Ehlers answered my emails quickly, and I got instant confirmation after applying. The online reservation system was easy, flexible, and tailored to my needs for a smooth trip. #ABVSupport #TravelPrep #peru #cusco #travel #trips #abroaderview abroaderview.org

Bridgeport University Physician Assistant Healthcare Group at the end of the mission in Peru Cusco with abroaderview.org This was a fantastic experience, which I highly recommend to any students aspiring to make a difference. Everything from the food to the culture, to the grateful look on children’s faces left a lasting impression which I’ll never forget. The hosting facility was fantastic, and the “ A Broader View” representative was superb.  abroderview.org #physicianassistant #universityofbridgeport #uofb #cusco #peru #outreach #volunteer #gapyear #volunteering #charity #abroaderview #missiontrip

What an incredible start to the week in Cusco, Peru!  On Monday, our team joined forces with the amazing physician assistants from Bridgeport University for an impactful outreach event. We kicked things off with CPR training, distributed reading glasses, and provided essential healthcare training. We anticipated 100 attendees, but were blown away when over 170 people showed up!  The energy and enthusiasm from the community were truly inspiring. Looking ahead, Tuesday will take us to a rural outreach near Cusco, where we’ll continue our mission to make a difference. Stay tuned for more updates! #volunteering #gapyear #volunteer #outreach #peru #cusco #uofb #universityofbridgeport #physicianassistant
