The Guardian reports that the Israeli army demolished entire villages in southern Lebanon using large-scale explosive detonations, targeting areas such as Taybeh, Naqoura, and Deir Seryan. Rights groups warn the widespread destruction of homes could constitute a war crime. Residents report losing homes, livelihoods, and memories, with many displaced again. Israel has indicated plans to establish a “security zone” in southern Lebanon, threatening long-term displacement and the erasure of entire communities.
I welcome the ceasefire agreement reached overnight, which will bring a moment of relief to the region and the world. Together with our partners we must do all we can to support and sustain this ceasefire, turn it into a lasting agreement and re-open the Strait of Hormuz.
