There’s no question in my mind FSD (or autopilot) was turned off at the time of the crash. That’s not the point: $TSLA needs to think longer term and invest in a 1-2 person PR team to squash mistaken commentary by the media like this. TSLA’s inability to control the narrative is again hurting the company’s brand and reputation for safety, which will be critical as it tries to secure regulatory approvals to launch fully autonomous Cybercabs with no steering wheel or pedals later this year. Why put a timely launch of Cybercab at risk to save a few dollars?

Intense debate continues online about the Fox News dashcam footage from an August 18, 2025 incident near Houston involving a mom with her infant in a $TSLA Cybertruck. The video shows the truck allegedly in Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode failing to follow a right-hand curve on the overpass, barreling straight ahead through traffic cones, and slamming into a concrete barrier instead of curving safely. Tesla has stated via Elon Musk that autopilot (or FSD?) was disengaged four seconds before impact. The victim is suing TSLA for $1 million.
While we believe video logs will show that FSD (or autopilot) was in fact disengaged prior to the accident, the absence of an effective PR team at TSLA to put to rest media misstatements (here Fox News) is again hurting the company’s brand and reputation for safety, which will be critical as it tries to secure regulatory approvals to launch fully autonomous Cybercabs with no steering wheel or pedals nationally later this year.

The $TSLA investment debate is NOT about whether TSLA will solve for unsupervised (L4/L5) autonomy or scale it quickly. The vast majority of investors believe TSLA has already solved for generalized unsupervised autonomy and now it’s just executing on the promise.
The debate is whether others ( $GOOG $BIDU $PONY $WRD $AMZN and now $NVDA) will be able to solve for unsupervised autonomy and scale as well, and what market share of the autonomous ride hailing market TSLA will take vs others, given the regulatory obstacles and its lack of marketing muscle. IMHO the reason FSD has just a 15% take rate is not due to its technology, which is clearly superior, but due to its high relative price ($99/month) and lack of marketing presence. Like in EVs, TSLA will not gain outsized share in autonomous ride hailing if it doesn’t develop the skills needed to communicate with mass consumers.

Unlike $TSLA bears, we’ve always believed TSLA would solve for unsupervised autonomy and at some point remove safety monitors from its robotaxis (see my 12/24 post below). That day is here with today’s announcement that TSLA has started to remove safety monitors from its robotaxis in Austin. Our issue has long been TSLA’s valuation - and specifically, how does TSLA trade at a 2026 P/E of 200x+ when five other EV manufacturers ( $GOOG $BIDU $PONY $WRD $AMZN) are already completing 750K paid robotaxi rides per week without safety monitors, and $NVDA - no slouch - is launching its own unsupervised autonomous platform, which will democratize unsupervised autonomy for other OEMs? We continue to like TSLA the company; we don’t like $TSLA the stock.

Montebello Police Officer Strikes Pedestrian
While a Montebello officer was responding to a DUI call, a pedestrian jaywalked into his path, sending the pedestrian airborne.
The officers patrol vehicle lifted slightly and slammed into a light pole near by.
The victim is listed in critical but stable condition.
