In our overwhelmingly conservative and puritanical moment, social feeds are full of Ben Shapiro deriding “woke socialist TikToks” or the ‘Pod Save’ guys horrified by footage of violent ICE raids. But in the ‘Heated Rivalry’ reaction videos that have become increasingly popular among straight-guy cultural commenters, the bros are overcome with joy when two gay professional players start doing it. These reaction videos are “cathartic, even if they’re just digital echoes of a communal experience,” Kathryn VanArendonk writes. “It’s rare for any one piece of culture to inspire as many reaction videos as ‘Heated Rivalry’ has.” The reaction videos all follow the same formula: The dudes begin the viewing with a sense of skepticism or, at the very least, some uncertainty. They’re not entirely sure how to talk about what they’re seeing. “Can gay men do missionary? Shane seems to be bottoming most of the time; can Ilya ever have a turn? Is that not how this works? How does this work, exactly?” Underneath the unfamiliarity, unspoken but always present, is the question of whether this is okay for them to be watching at all — whether being open to enjoying ‘Heated Rivalry’ threatens their masculinity. But instead of remaining in squeamish discomfort, these dudes go on a journey parallel to the one Shane and Ilya experience. After initial jokes, their demeanor shifts. They start to clutch things and celebrate, sometimes repurposing a chant about getting a hockey puck into a net (“Get in, get in, get in”) to cheer for two dudes to start having intercourse.
