What kind of AI does the world really want? At @MicrosoftAI, we’re working towards Humanist Superintelligence (HSI): incredibly advanced AI capabilities that always work for, in service of, people and humanity. And to do this we have formed the MAI Superintelligence Team.

@jdzamfi @bryanhaoenwang It's easy for me to imagine this paper being recognized years from now as being a flagship example of the movement toward "interfaces for navigating the unknown". Excellent work!

@bryanhaoenwang Not *quite* what you're looking for (following!) but you might find this upcoming paper at CHI '25 interesting. (Haven't even tweet streamed it yet!) zamfi.net/pdf/CHI25_Beyo… Upshot: if you *do* actually care about what program you end up with, the challenges shift quite a bit!

I'd be excited to read any HCI papers studying the phenomenon of vibe coding (especially involving speech input and agents)—it's such a paradigm shift in programming.

@DavLedo @IanArawjo Literally my go-to reference for justifying all-things toolkit, and to some degree all-things systems. It's a staple!

@IanArawjo Not to self plug, legitimately trying to continue the conversation. My colleagues and I in 2018 did a survey on toolkit evaluation that I think extends to many authoring contexts. James Fogarty also has a very inspiring paper on Code and Contribution dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/31…

A reviewer in the *systems* subcomittee of CHI states in their review of our system paper that it is not "a fit for CHI" because CHI requires user evaluations. Folks, is this not absurd?

Does anyone else in HCI have experience reporting results from linear mixed models? I feel like the standards just aren’t there in our field for how to report LMMs and post-hoc analyses.

So apparently the debates on Likert scales have ended in people recommending parametric tests that treat the Likert data as interval? Is there something I'm missing here? Bc I feel like I just wasted an hour re-discovering the Likert scale debate only to end up where I started.

@FarnazJ_ If I remember correctly, we asked them to describe how they spent the downtime. We felt like asking them for something more validating (eg. a photograph of what they did). Asking them to video themselves during the break isn't exactly immune to issues either!

@acwio Thanks! We're worried introducing a break where they don't do anything will induce them to take on another task in parallel, and then the rest of our task will have their divided attention, which puts their pre and post break ratings on unequal footing. Did you encounter this?

We're asking crowd workers to do a longish task where they differentiate between items (say articles). We're worried that fatigue might inhibit differentiation. We want to introduce a break where they do sth lightweight and fun. Has anyone tried this? What activities did you use?

Did we stop working on HCI theory as a community? (honest question...) I'm looking for examples like information foraging and such. What did we develop in the 2000s, 2010s, 2020s?
